What is Bone Cancer – Symptoms and Treatment

According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 2,650 new cases and 1,460 deaths from bone cancer are to be reported in the United States in 2010. Osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma are the four types of this cancer in its primary form.

However, cancer in prostate, breast or lung can also spread to the bones owing to metastasis as part of secondary form of this ailment. This article tries to gain further insight on the dreadful ailment.

Symptoms of Bone Cancer:

  • Asymptomatic or without any symptoms in the initial stages
  • Pain in the bone
  • Painless formation of mass tumors
  • Weakening of the bones in the regions surrounding the tumor
  • Fractures caused by tumors
  • Rectal bleeding

As the disease spreads from other organs of origin to the bones, the following signs are observed:

  • Bone pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Sharp nerve pain
  • Nausea
  • Incontinence of urine or faeces
  • Increased thirst
  • Night sweats
  • Anorexia
  • Weight loss
  • Constipation
  • Dehydration
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of function or sensation in limbs
  • Confusion
  • Fractures from minimal trauma
  • Increased urination

Treatment of Bone Cancer:

The treatment of the cancer in the bone is highly dependent on the type of the tumor. There are basically two types of tumor namely, benign and malignant. While the former affects a specific locations, the later has the ability to spread the ailment to remote locations of the body.

While Ewing’s sarcoma can be treated by chemotherapy and radiation therapy, chondrosarcoma is less responsive to these treatments. Metastron is drug prescribed for every three month which relieves the primary symptom of pain. Surgery involving amputation of organs along with the combined application of chemotherapy and radiation therapy are also tried on some patients to inhibit tumor growth.

Even though some benign tumor have the potential to turn malignant or cancerous later, the outcome of most of the treatments on these tumor is good. Depending upon the size, location and type of cancer, even malignant tumor if diagnosed early can be cured.
